The Amsterdam UMC Run is a fundraising run in Amsterdam Zuidoost, taking participants through the green spaces surrounding the medical campus and directly inside the AMC hospital. It takes place annually in May as Amsterdam UMC’s dedicated running day, featuring 5 km and 10 km races, a 1.2 km Family Run, and a Hattrick option for those completing all distances. The event has a limit of approximately 3,000 participants and frequently sells out, with a few spots sometimes available at the registration desk for last-minute entries.
The day centers on the hospital as much as the running itself. Staff from Amsterdam UMC, their families, local residents, club runners, and former patients are all welcome. Patients have the option to cross the finish line with a companion, such as a doctor, physiotherapist, or family member. For many, reaching the finish is viewed as a personal achievement rather than a competitive result, regardless of whether they run, walk, or use a wheelchair. The Amsterdam UMC Foundation organizes the event to generate funds for research and improved patient care, with participants able to select specific projects like cancer research, dementia research, sports cardiology, or brain stimulation for Alzheimer's patients. Beyond the races, the event includes music, food trucks, entertainment, and a children's area, creating a hospital community atmosphere with a racing component.
