Approximately 1,600 runners start the Texel Half Marathon by disembarking the TESO ferry, with the ferry's horn signaling their departure onto the island. This race takes place annually on the final weekend of September. It features a half marathon, a quarter marathon, and an eighth marathon, all starting from Den Hoorn. Participants in the half and quarter marathons have the option of either the ferry start or an island start, accommodating those who seek the unique boat launch and those preferring a conventional beginning.
The course crosses Texel's forests, dunes, beaches, natural reserves, and agricultural lands before concluding in Groen. Competitors hail from Texel, mainland Netherlands, and international locations, with demand consistently high; over 2,000 entries typically sell out rapidly. Established in 2006, the race's primary appeal remains its straightforward and distinctive characteristic: a large group of runners departing a ferry, subsequently dispersing across a North Sea island exposed to sun, sea air, and wind.
