At Kristiansund Backyard Ultra, runners must return to Frei Skole before the next full hour begins, or their race concludes. This backyard ultra, held in Kristiansund, features a 6.7 km loop that starts precisely on the hour. Anyone missing the cutoff or the subsequent start is eliminated. The event provides 3-hour, 6-hour, and 12-hour categories, meaning each participant's final result is determined by the last completed loop.
The course presents challenges: previous races have involved icy trails, steep inclines, snow, slush, and over 100 meters of elevation gain each lap. Despite these conditions, eight runners finished all 12 laps. Frei Skole serves as the rest area, offering an indoor space, showers, basic food, and a kiosk. Participants are advised to bring their own equipment, food, beverages, warm clothing, headlamp, and reflectors. Competitor Aleksander Gallala described finishing as “inhuman,” highlighting the combined pressure of the clock, cold terrain, and consistent ascents.
