Mensen Ernst Minneløp is a community race in Fresvik, the village in Sogn og Fjordane where Norwegian ultrarunner Mensen Ernst originated. It takes place annually, typically near the end of June, honoring a runner whose own distances far exceeded those of a standard road race. The event initially featured a quarter-marathon, then transitioned to a measured 10 km for easier time comparisons with other races, and later adopted a roughly 15 km route from Modig Stadion into the Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Area.
The present format consists of four loops, all commencing and concluding within Modig Stadion. Participants select the number of loops they wish to run, though the loops must be completed in a specific sequence. The program also incorporates a children’s race and a wheelchair race. Each course is named after one of Mensen Ernst’s running achievements, integrating the memorial concept into the race map itself. This structure accommodates experienced runners, novices, children, and wheelchair athletes by not requiring all to complete the same distance.
