The Midnight Sun Marathon takes place in Tromsø, Norway, located approximately 350 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, allowing participants to run in daylight during the night. This event, held annually in June, is the world's northernmost marathon certified by AIMS. It covers more than just the marathon, featuring five measured road races of varying distances. This setup accommodates marathoners, shorter-distance runners, and those drawn to the Arctic environment as much as their race times.
The marathon course begins and ends in Tromsø's city center, crossing the Tromsø Bridge twice. Tromsø's summer climate ensures the sun remains visible throughout the night, providing the race's unique appeal: running through the city in daylight at a time typically associated with darkness. Established in 1990, the event now attracts runners from Norway and internationally. Many return for the intimate city atmosphere and the supportive crowds near the finish line. Recent results indicate a significant representation from Nordic countries, with athletes from Norway, Sweden, Kenya, Ethiopia, Great Britain, Germany, Ukraine, and Eritrea appearing on past winner lists.
