The Jack T. Farrar, Jr. "Fill the Shoes" 5K is a November community run/walk held in the Hayfield Farm neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. Starting and finishing at Hayfield Park, the race uses chip timing and typically attracts over 150 participants, offering a more intimate setting than a large city event. The run supports the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, with all net proceeds directed to PanCAN.
The course covers 5K through multiple neighborhood loops, providing a local, contained route rather than a point-to-point design. This marks the event's 15th year, and it has raised over $67,000 to date. Participants receive a long-sleeve technical shirt and a "Fill the Shoes" car magnet. Awards are presented to finishers in five-year age groups, from under 10 to 70 and over, with pint glasses serving as age-group prizes. Following the race, volunteers and local sponsors contribute to a post-race gathering featuring food and raffle items.
