The Black Hawk YMCA Triathlon is a sprint triathlon held at George Wyth State Park in Waterloo, Iowa, with racing centered around the Cedar Valley. The main event begins in the morning, featuring a compact sprint format: a 500-meter swim, a 16.5-mile bike ride, and a 5K run, totaling 18.25 miles. The series also offers a relay option for teams and a separate 500-meter open-water swim.
The swim takes advantage of the park's setting. The bike and run segments are designed to keep the day manageable for newer triathletes while remaining challenging for experienced racers. Individual triathlon entries are open to participants aged 12 to 99, creating a wider age range than most adult-only events. The relay allows groups to divide the swim, bike, and run segments, and the standalone open-water swim provides an option for those not participating in the full triathlon.
