Conquer the Cove is a late-May trail race at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve in Roanoke, Virginia, offering 25k and marathon distances. The race starts early in the morning. The setting is unusually large for a city park: Carvins Cove covers 12,700 acres, ranks as the second largest municipal park in the United States, and has about 40 miles of roads and trails around a major water source. The race is designed for runners seeking a challenging day on dirt trails over a flat road course.
The courses utilize difficult, maintained, well-marked trails. Non-local runners can explore about 80% of the park’s trail system in a single run. Roanoke runners face a direct test against local trail regulars, while visitors gain a quick introduction to the area’s primary run-and-ride terrain. The race is part of the Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series, and virtual 25k and marathon options contribute to RNUTS qualification. The timing coincides with mountain laurel and rhododendrons in bloom, providing a clear seasonal marker for the demanding climbs and technical running.
