Crystal Lake Triathlon is a USAT-sanctioned sprint triathlon based at Crystal Cove on Old Route 66 in Averill Park, New York. The race uses Crystal Lake for a half-mile single-loop swim, then sends athletes onto an 18-mile bike leg and a 3-mile run. It is run by the Capital District Triathlon Club and offers adult, youth, individual, relay team, and Aquabike entries. The Aquabike option uses the same swim and bike course as the triathlon, then ends when athletes come back into transition after the ride.
The bike is an out-and-back route through Rensselaer County countryside, with local organizers warning that it is one of the tougher sprint bike courses in the area and recommending a Tuesday night course preview. The run is mostly flat and loops around Crystal Lake, including park sections near a playground. Spectators can watch the swim from around the lake, which makes the opening leg easier to follow than at many small triathlons. Athletes need a USAT membership or one-day license, must sign the USAT waiver, and cannot rely on race-day registration.
