The Fineview Step Challenge takes runners and walkers up over 1,600 steps in Pittsburgh’s Fineview neighborhood. This 5-mile urban step and trail race occurs in October, starting at Fineview Overlook on Catoma Street between Meadville and Lanark Streets. The Fineview Citizen’s Council hosts the event, which has a long annual history.
The course ascends Fineview’s hills, streets, trails, and twelve public staircases. Its most challenging section is Rising Main Avenue, Pittsburgh’s steepest public staircase, featuring 371 steps in one part, about the height of a 17-story building. The route incorporates Fineview’s overlooks and hillside streets for views toward Downtown, maintaining a neighborhood focus by encouraging local residents and visitors to be active.
