Leftovers Trail Run races are post-holiday trail events focused on utilizing existing race materials: old bibs, extra shirts, past medals, and leftover swag. The name is featured in several small trail races, including a Thanksgiving-weekend 5K and 10K at Briar Chapel in Chapel Hill, North Carolina; a Squatchy Leftovers Trail Party at South Mountain Reservation in West Orange, New Jersey; and a Lake Louisa State Park race in Florida offering 4-mile and 8-mile options.
The Chapel Hill race takes place on single-track at Briar Chapel two days after Thanksgiving, followed by a post-race party with food, a free kids race, contests, giveaways, and discounted extra tees. The New Jersey event includes 5K, 10K, 25K, 50K, and Kids 1M distances on a 5K loop featuring hard-packed carriage trails, rocky and rooty singletrack, and moderate climbs, with the 50K accumulating approximately 2,890 feet of elevation gain. The Squatchy event limits participants to 400, has sold out for six consecutive editions, is accessible via NJ Transit, and benefits Bigger Than The Trail, an organization providing free therapy. The Florida race continues the leftover theme with throwback bibs and medals, chip timing, live music, and one or two loops at Lake Louisa State Park.
