Teams begin in Eureka Springs and cover over 200 miles through the Ozarks, concluding at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Outback in the Ozarks is Arkansas' sole overnight team endurance relay. Teams navigate day and night along a multiday route timed to coincide with fall foliage. The complete race spans approximately 205 to 207 miles, divided into 36 relay legs across five counties and five state parks.
The course follows country roads through the Ozark National Forest, passing Withrow Springs, Hobbs State Park, Lake Fort Smith, Devil's Den, and Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. Teams typically consist of 4 to 12 runners. A 65-mile Day Relay option allows runners to join Saturday morning at Lake Fort Smith and proceed to the same finish line. The event was established by Todd and Kimberlee Guin. After a six-year hiatus, it resumed with a road-trip atmosphere: teams decorate their support vehicles, camp in state parks, and collectively manage the extended intervals between relay exchanges.
