The Portland Marathon begins and ends at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland, Oregon, with runners assembling on the first Sunday of October. It is a road race offering both marathon and half marathon distances. The event has been held annually since 1972, establishing it as one of the longest continuously run marathons in the United States. The participant numbers have increased from 86 in the inaugural race to over 10,000 runners in its more recent editions.
The route incorporates Portland's cityscape: bridge crossings, the Willamette River, and downtown landmarks are integrated into the course. The first edition took place on Sauvie Island, and subsequent routes evolved before the current event adopted a modified city course. Elite runners have set course records of 2:17:21 for men and 2:36:40 for women. The race also sees wide participation, including a 90-year-old finisher. OHSU presents the event, and Brooksee manages the race.
