Ragnar Trail Arizona is a desert relay held at McDowell Mountain Regional Park, near Phoenix in Maricopa County. Teams camp for the weekend, running relay-style on single-track trails. Standard teams consist of 8 runners, while ultra teams have 4. The entire route spans approximately 121 miles, with each runner on a standard team covering about 15.2 miles throughout the event.
The course features three trail loops within the park, offering mountain views, saguaro cactus, and desert sunsets. The trails accommodate a wide range of runners, not exclusively technical specialists. Ragnar Village functions as the team's base. While one runner is on the course, the rest of the team camps, rests, eats, and awaits the handoff under the night sky. Runners have the option to arrive a night early for additional camping before the relay begins.
