The Salt Lake City Marathon begins near the foothills at the Olympic Legacy Bridge on the University of Utah campus, situated at just over 4,800 feet above sea level. This annual road marathon, held in April since 2004, crosses Salt Lake City, Millcreek, and Holladay. The full marathon shares its starting point with a half marathon, and a bike tour follows the same marathon course earlier in the day. The event is designed around a city-and-valley route, distinct from a closed park loop.
Participants proceed from the university area into central Salt Lake City, passing through local streets, neighborhoods, and business districts before concluding downtown at Library Square. The course traces the base of the Wasatch Mountains for a segment and descends from the foothills to lower elevations; the half marathon is characterized as largely flat and downhill. The bike tour mirrors the full marathon's distance, with a time limit of 1 hour and 45 minutes. The race has had multiple ownership changes, and its course records stand at 2:15:14 for men and 2:30:08 for women.
