Wausau 24 is a race weekend at Nine Mile County Forest in central Wisconsin. It centers on the Midwest's largest 24-hour mountain bike race and a Friday evening trail run that begins near sunset. The bike race provides solo and team categories over 6, 12, and 24 hours, with single-speed options and 2-person or 4-person team formats. The trail run follows the same lap concept as the bike event: runners select 1, 2, or 4 laps on a roughly 5K loop, offering 5K, 10K, and 20K distances. Lights are mandatory for the run as the race commences while daylight diminishes.
The course combines singletrack mountain bike trails and ski trails. Distances may vary slightly because of the trails' winding path through the forest. Runners return to Dirt Town at the conclusion of each lap, contributing to a race-village atmosphere rather than a point-to-point trail run. The weekend also features live music, food, local craft beer, and free children's races, with parents invited to assist as course marshals or offer encouragement from the sidelines. It attracts endurance mountain bikers pursuing long solo efforts, teams sharing laps throughout the day and night, trail runners seeking a short or longer evening race, and families remaining for the children's events.
