The Wausau Trail Run takes participants into Nine Mile County Forest on Friday evening, as daylight diminishes, during the Wausau 24 weekend. This trail race offers three distance options: a single lap for approximately 5K, two laps for about 10K, or four laps for roughly 20K. Headlamps are mandatory, giving the event a character more akin to a dusk-and-night trail excursion than a typical road 5K.
The circuit incorporates singletrack mountain bike paths and ski trails, featuring roots, rocks, sharp turns, and uneven terrain. The lap structure is similar to the Wausau 24 Mountain Bike Race, connecting the run to the main endurance event. Participants can preview the course on Friday and then enjoy music, food, and beverages. A separate 1-mile trail lap is available for younger children, with parental accompaniment permitted.
