Innsbruck is hemmed in by the Alps at 574 metres elevation, making it a climbing destination for cyclists and trail runners alike. The Ötztaler Radmarathon—227km of valley and mountain passes—starts from the city and defines the region's ultra-distance cycling culture; the shorter Bergkaiser loop offers steep pitches into the surrounding peaks. Runners tackle the Alpenzoolauf, a 3.8km loop, or escape into the high-altitude trails that ring the valley; winter turns the city into a ski-running hub, but summer brings the Tirol läuft Frauenlauf (21km) and consistent alpine running on singletrack.
