Kiel's running and cycling scene centres on the Förde waterfront and the gently rolling moraines of Schleswig-Holstein. The 38. Kiel Lauf is the city's flagship race, a flat 21km loop around the fjord that draws strong local competition. Cyclists use Kiel as a launch point for the region's signature gravel and ultra-distance events — Gravellissimo Waffel Ride and Auf den Spuren der Eiszeit both exploit the glacial terrain rolling inland, with elevation gains of 800–1200m across mixed road and gravel surfaces within 60km of the city.
