Pisa's running courses are characterised by flat terrain through the city and along the Arno riverbank; the Maratona e Mezza Maratona di Pisa stays mostly at river level with minimal elevation. Cyclists have direct access to serious terrain within 20km—the Randonnée MTB della Valdera and Granfondo della Versilia both climb into the Apennine foothills and coastal ranges of Tuscany, where gravel and road routes gain 800–1200m over rolling agricultural landscapes.
