About this race

The Karwendelmarsch begins in Scharnitz at sunrise, leading hikers and mountain runners across the Karwendel mountains to Achensee. Approximately 2,500 individuals from around the world participate annually, with entries selling out rapidly. This event is a long mountain march and trail-running competition, distinct from road races, where the physical exertion is closely linked to the protected Karwendel Nature Park landscape. The course requires participants to traverse the Karwendel on foot, progressing from a mountain village toward Achensee. The participants include long-distance walkers, runners, club athletes, and individuals attracted by the early start and the scale of the challenge. Originally a fundraiser for young Tyrolean ski talent, it evolved into Tyrol’s largest sporting event for over twenty years. It was later revitalized by Achensee Tourism and the Seefeld region, emphasizing the protection of natural resources. A portion of each entry fee now contributes to nature conservation and alpine pasture maintenance along the course.
