About this race
The Grossglockner Ultra-Trail begins and ends in Kaprun, Austria, circling the Grossglockner on a 110 km mountain loop. The primary race ascends approximately 6,500 meters, primarily on hiking trails and natural paths, awarding finishers five ITRA points. Established in 2015, it has a 29-hour time limit for an official finish. This limit suits the event: it is a demanding alpine challenge where climbing, weather, night running, and self-sufficiency are as critical as speed on flatter sections.
The route incorporates landmarks like Mooserboden Reservoir, Kapruner Törl, Rudolfshütte, Kalser Tauernhaus, Pfortscharte, Margaritze Reservoir, Glocknerhaus, and Fusch as key points along the circuit. Participants must be self-sufficient in the mountains, with mandatory equipment required based on the distance. The series also provides shorter races: 84 km, 57 km, 37 km, and 16 km events, along with a two-person relay of the full ultra, divided into 48 km and 62 km segments. Previous years have seen course modifications, interruptions, or cancellations due to severe weather, meaning race times may not always be directly comparable.
