About this race
King of the Lake sends riders on a full lap of Lake Attersee in Upper Austria, with the start, finish, and event area at Marina Schörfling. It is a road-bike time trial in the Salzkammergut: riders race against the clock, not in a bunch sprint, over roughly 47.2 kilometers of lakeside road. The shore road is closed to traffic, giving the event a professional setup and letting riders use the whole course for speed, pacing, and aero position. The race is held in late September and has grown into Europe’s biggest individual time trial.
The route is simple to understand and hard to execute: one fast circuit around Lake Attersee, with every second counting from the ramp to the return to Schörfling. Individual riders are the core of the race, but 4-rider and 10-rider teams also line up, so the day includes solo efforts and coordinated team pacing. Cyclists come from across Europe and beyond, and the sharp end is genuinely quick: winning rides have dipped under 56 minutes, with top riders averaging close to 50 km/h for the full lap. The race has been running for more than a decade and is organized by Radsportverein Atterbiker, giving amateur racers, club teams, and professionals a chance to ride a traffic-free lap of one of Austria’s major lakes.
