Vienna City Marathon

The Vienna City Marathon begins at the Vienna International Centre, crosses the Reichsbrücke, and concludes at Heldenplatz in the historic center. It has been Austria’s largest road running event, held annually in Vienna since 1984. Alongside the main marathon, the event includes a half marathon, a team relay, a short fun run, and children’s races held the day prior. Over 30,000 participants typically register for one of the weekend's events, ensuring a diverse field beyond just the elite runners. The course offers participants an extensive tour of the city, starting near the Danube, passing through Praterstern, proceeding along the Ringstraße to the State Opera, heading towards Schönbrunn Palace, and then returning through central Vienna. Half-marathon participants finish at Heldenplatz, while marathoners proceed past the Rathaus, Alsergrund, Friedensbrücke, the Prater, Ernst-Happel-Stadion, and Lusthaus before reaching the same finish line. The event originated as the Frühjahrsmarathon with under 800 competitors. Its history features notable Austrian performances by Gerhard Hartmann, early victories by Antoni Niemczak and Renate Kieninger, and participations by Haile Gebrselassie and Paula Radcliffe.

ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM Wien Race Day

The ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM Wien Race Day is a road-bike criterium held in Vienna's Donaustadt district, scheduled for late May. Its name reflects its association with ARBÖ, ASKÖ, and RLM Wien. Riders can find the complete race announcement on RLM Wien's homepage. As a criterium, the event consists of multiple laps on a short road circuit, differing from point-to-point or mountain routes. Gernot Kokas is listed as the organizer and contact person. The race is featured in Bikeboard's Rennen & Events calendar, and local bike shops like BIKEPACKING.at and Starbike are mentioned for riders needing equipment.

About cycling & running in Vienna

Vienna Training Notes

Running: Locals run Prater Hauptallee when they want rhythm without drama. The path runs 5 km under trees, with pavement or mulch underfoot and enough width for intervals. 1 km. The Donaukanal gives you 17 km shared with cyclists when the city centre feels tight. Vienna Running Collective, adidas Runners Vienna, Runtasia, Trailrunning Vienna, and Laufen in Wien keep the group runs moving. VCM Training Runs meet every Tuesday at 6:30 PM in Prater Hauptallee. Vienna City Marathon is the anchor event in April.

Cycling: Locals ride the Danube Cycle Path, Donaukanal, Ringstrasse, Wiental bike path, and the Prater main avenue route. The city gives cyclists a network of 1,721 kilometers, so base miles can start almost anywhere. The Ringstrasse tour starts at Stadtpark and runs about 5.5 km. The Prater main avenue route runs about 9 km with shade and no car traffic. The Danube Canal bike path runs about 7 km, and the Danube Cycle Path from Klosterneuburg runs about 50 km. Vienna International Cycle Club and Road Cycling Vienna | VICC Racing Division bring the bunch vibe. ARBÖ ASKÖ RLM Wien Race Day brings the crit energy. The climbs sit toward the Vienna Woods and the foothills of the Alps.

Season: Spring suits steady training because temperatures sit between 6°C and 15°C. Autumn works well for sharpening before Enzersdorfer Herbstlauf, Vienna Night Run, or a late Parkrun. Summer mornings work best because the day can move from 12°C to over 30°C. The Lobau gives cyclists shade in summer, and Donauinsel still handles long flat running if you start early. Winters stay fairly cold, with daily mean temperatures around or a bit above freezing. Locals shift more work to Prater Hauptallee, Donaupark, the VCM Winter Running Series, and controlled Z2 when snow shows up less often than it used to.
