About this race
The Sofie Walk & Run begins at Nachtegaalstraat 28 in Mol, Flanders, held annually on the second Saturday of October to honor Sofie Roofthooft. This event focuses on walking and running, not just racing, with marked paths and a flexible start between 9 AM and 3 PM. Now in its eighth year, the event offers various distances to accommodate different participants: 3, 6, and 9 km for casual walkers, 15 km for more experienced walkers, and 25 km for those seeking a longer challenge, which includes a 10 km segment navigable by GPS.
The courses traverse the natural areas in and around Mol that Sofie frequented for her walks and runs. Along these routes, participants encounter texts cherished by Sofie, weaving a personal memorial through the sporting event. The day includes activities for families, such as a bouncy castle for children and refreshments available for those who wish to remain on-site without participating in the walk. The event also supports Kom op tegen Kanker, collecting free donations via the charity's official system, which are tax-deductible. Past events have contributed significant amounts, with donations of €3,500 and €7,000 previously given to local initiatives supporting the cause.
