About this race
The Šachty – Štěpánka uphill race is a Czech running event held at the Šachty ski area in Vysoké nad Jizerou. Participants begin near the lower station of the Vysoké ski lift, at an elevation of 508 meters, and ascend 6.5 km to the Štěpánka lookout tower in Příchovice, reaching a final elevation of 958 meters. The course involves a 450-meter elevation gain, presenting a short race with a consistent mountain-climb character, distinct from extended trail runs. TJ Vysoké nad Jizerou and Český skiklub are the organizers, and the race has been held for a minimum of 35 editions.
The route departs the ski-lift area, crossing Sklenařice and Paseky nad Jizerou, before concluding near a prominent local ridge landmark. Approximately 2.5 km of the course is on asphalt, with the remainder on well-maintained dirt and forest paths. Registration takes place at Restaurace Šachty, situated near the upper ski-lift station, and same-day entries are permitted. The event accommodates a wide range of participants, from juniors to older male age groups, including a division for those over 70. This inclusivity fosters an atmosphere of a local hill climb, where both club runners and seasoned mountain runners start together.
