About this race
The Ettinger Backyard Ultra is a last-runner-standing race in Ettingen BL, following the classic backyard ultra rule: each runner has one hour to complete a 6.706 km loop. At the start of the next hour, all participants still in the race begin the same loop again; missing the start bell results in a DNF. The format is straightforward to grasp but demanding to endure, as rest, nutrition, gear changes, and preparation must all be accommodated within the time remaining after each lap.
The loop includes 60 meters of elevation gain, making the course challenging despite its seemingly manageable distance. Runners must stay on the designated course during a lap, cannot receive outside assistance while on the route, and are prohibited from using aids like poles. Audible signals sound three, two, and one minute before each start, followed by the bell that sends the remaining field out together. The victor is the last runner capable of finishing a full lap solo, and the event also features a team category.
