About this race
At 8:00 on a late-December morning, the Grüntal-Winterultra sends individual runners out for 50 km from Haldenstraße 10 in Freudenstadt-Grüntal, in Germany's Baden-Württemberg region. This is an annual winter ultra with a simple setup: the race proceeds in any weather, entries are made by email, late registration is possible shortly before the start, and there is no time limit.
The course uses four identical 12.5 km laps on field and forest paths, with light hills and direction arrows marking the way. Runners pass the start and finish area several times, so refreshments are available repeatedly there. The day also includes a breakfast buffet from early morning, hot food from midday, free drinks, and a certificate. Results are kept as one overall classification, with no age groups, and times are recorded only in hours and minutes. Overnight stays with catering can be arranged if requested during registration, fitting the race's small, practical, end-of-year ultra feel.
