About this race
The Berliner 10 km Lauf für Gefangene und auch für Externe is a small Berlin race held within the walls of JVA Plötzensee, offering a 10 km event and a 5 km option. It typically takes place in September at Friedrich-Olbricht-Damm in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. External participants require advance registration and ID. The field is small, capped at around 100 people, but the organization is formal: German Road Races manages the sporting aspects, and the Berlin Athletics Association provides official referees for federation-listed results.
The 10 km course consists of a 1,000-meter loop within the grounds of JVA Plötzensee and the youth detention center, run ten times. The route was measured by IAAF/AIMS A-grade measurer John Kunkeler, indicating it is a formally measured course. All seven Berlin correctional facilities can send runners, and inmates train seriously; JVA Plötzensee has provided regular running training since 2012. External club runners and helpers participate alongside prisoners. The top six finishers receive trophies, certificates, BERLIN-MARATHON jackets, and sports items from ISTAF Berlin.
