The Salzachbrückenlauf starts and finishes on Burghausen's Stadtplatz, below the 1,051-metre Burg zu Burghausen, the world's longest castle complex. Burghausen is situated on the Salzach river at the German-Austrian border, and the race incorporates that border. The event runs annually under Bürgerinsel Burghausen and offers several distances: a 505-metre parent-and-child run, a 3.2km Volkslauf, a 5.5km walk, and the 8.8km main race. Over 1,000 runners and walkers typically participate, ranging from children and hobby walkers to club runners and faster athletes. The 3.2km route goes through Burghausen's Old Town, crosses the Salzach into Austria, follows the river, and returns to Germany over another bridge. The 8.8km race includes a second lap, so runners cross the national border four times before reaching the finish back on the Stadtplatz. That longer route also includes rolling gravel paths around a bathing and rowing lake. The Salzachbrückenlauf is a charity run, organized by nine volunteers, with proceeds supporting local people and organizations in need.
