About this race
The Fehmarn Marathon begins and ends at the sports field of the island school in Burg auf Fehmarn, the main town on Germany's third-largest island. It is a flat, fast marathon with Baltic Sea air, open water views, and a course suited for runners seeking steady rhythm over significant climbing. The event also features a half marathon, quarter marathon, 5 km race, and a 1.5 km mini-run, making it more than just a full-marathon event.
The route heads south from Burg, then follows a long coastal stretch toward Fehmarn's eastern tip before heading north along the shore. Approximately 70 percent of the course is asphalt, but runners will also encounter dike paths and uneven field tracks, preventing it from feeling like a simple road loop. After about 25 km, the marathon begins to loop back toward Burg, returning to the same sports field. The sea remains visible throughout, and the island's lighthouses form part of the scenery. Due to Fehmarn's compact nature, the race offers an intimate, familiar atmosphere, distinct from a large-city marathon setting.
