About this race
The Halbmarathon und Volkslauf Herzogenrath offers a half marathon and a shorter popular run in Herzogenrath, located in the German Aachen region near the Dutch border. DJK Jung Siegfried Herzogenrath organizes the event, which aligns with the local Volkslauf tradition. This tradition features club-led races where beginners, regular runners, and stronger athletes participate together, rather than in events exclusively for elites. The broader Rur-Eifel-Volkslauf Cup, an annual series that included running, walking, Nordic walking, and hiking categories, accepted entries from the W/M U10 age groups and younger.
The cup linked events throughout the Aachen region, the Düren and Heinsberg districts, East Belgium, and the Netherlands. Consequently, runners frequently viewed race days as short excursions with family or support teams. Sport Lövenich from Düren managed the cup, with local clubs and hosts organizing individual races. At its height, the calendar listed over 40 organizers, later stabilizing around the mid-30s. More than 18,000 individuals competed in the series, and over 200 runners completed ten or more events. Participants evaluated races based on organization, course, and setting, not solely on times, with the Lichterlauf of Komet Steckenborn frequently recognized as the most scenic run in the series.
