About this race
The Köhlbrandbrückenlauf is a 12.3 km road race in Hamburg, crossing the Köhlbrandbrücke, a large harbor bridge usually off-limits to pedestrians. It takes place annually with separate morning, midday, and afternoon starts due to high demand. Approximately 5,000 participants register, and spots often sell out months before the event. A 90-minute time limit accommodates both newer runners and faster club runners, resulting in a more diverse field than typical performance-oriented races.
The primary attraction is the bridge: 3.6 km long, 53 meters high, with asphalt underfoot and harbor air surrounding participants. A climb precedes the panoramic view from the summit. From there, runners overlook Hamburg's port before returning to a city race route connecting the harbor area and the Speicherstadt. The event is frequently cited as Germany's largest bridge run, its straightforward appeal evident: for a single day, a piece of transport infrastructure transforms into a running course.
