About this race
The Osternburger Mittsommernachts-Berglauf is a 5.4 km mountain run in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, held annually around midsummer at the Osternburger Utkiek. It begins at 21:06, aligning with its name: an evening race utilizing the extended daylight of midsummer, distinct from a typical morning road race. A Nordic walking option is also available, making the event suitable for participants beyond those seeking a strenuous hill effort.
The course navigates the Osternburger Utkiek, a 48-hectare green space in the Osternburg district developed on the former Eidechsenstrasse landfill. Three artificial hills were constructed during the landfill's operation, now connected by park paths. The most notable feature is the S-shaped ridge trail linking the summits of these three mounds, with the peak of the Neufeld cone designated as the Utkiek, or lookout point. This transformation from landfill to parkland shapes the race's unique character: a short course with significant elevation gain, set within a landscape reclaimed from industrial use instead of natural mountains.
