The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships take place in February and March at various host locations, organized by FIS. They occur every two years in odd-numbered years and encompass the core Nordic skiing disciplines: cross-country skiing, ski jumping, and Nordic combined, which integrates jumping with cross-country racing. The championships initially featured men's events and subsequently introduced women's competitions. There isn't a set course, as each host designs the races using their own ski stadiums, trails, and jumping hills. The event's history is closely linked to the Winter Olympics; Olympic victors were also recognized as world champions for many years before the championships adopted their own odd-year schedule. Early competitions were known by names like Rendezvous races and FIS races before the World Championships title became standard, and the program expanded over time to include relays, women's distance races, normal-hill jumping, and team events.
Running: Locals run the city centre, the Aarhus River, Brabrand Lake, Riis Skov, and Marselisborg Forests without overthinking it. Aarhus 1900 keeps a clubhouse in Marselisborg. Run for Friendship runs from Studenterhus Aarhus at Fredrik Nielsens Vej 3 every Tuesday and Thursday at 17:00. Mikkeller Running Club Aarhus meets several times a week. The 6 km Must-See Tour works for easy laps in Aarhus C. Marselisborg Forests give you trail running and The Deer Park. Brabrand Lake gives runners around 10 km for steady Z2. Aarhus Half Marathon and 1900 Halvmaraton 2026 are the anchor races.
Cycling: Locals ride from Aarhus Harbour when the legs need a relaxed spin. Brabrand Lake Path gives the easy loop. The Aarhus region gives cyclists more than 500 kilometres of routes, so base miles are never the problem. Ørnbjergruten runs 34 kilometres in Mols Bjerge National Park. Ørnbjergruten is 34 km and climbs 1,160 m, so that is the big day out. Kalø Slotsruin climbs 2 km and gains 626 m. MCC Løgten Criterium suits the crit mood. Aarhus Bay Triathlon 4-16-4 gives multisport people an anchor event.
Season: April and May feel like the clean start for running intervals, longer rides, and honest base miles. June to August bring warmer days, café legs by the stream, and bright water along the bay. Locals use summer for Marselisborg trails, Brabrand Lake laps, Moesgaard Beach Loop, and longer coastal rides toward Odder, Hou, Saksild, and Moesgaard. December to March turns cooler, often frosty, and sometimes snowy. Winter cycling is a bit of a drag, with dark, cold, wet rides. Runners still get Riis Skov, Marselisborg Forests, and the city paths when the headwind makes the bike feel optional.
