Granada

Granada's running and cycling pivot on the Sierra Nevada, which rises immediately south of the city to 3,479m at Mulhacén. Runners favour the flat Genil river paths through town, but serious training means climbing into the hills; the Sierra Nevada Limite Gran Fondo (146km) draws cyclists from across Spain for high-altitude passes and sustained 8–10% grades through the national park. The BTT Geoparque Benalúa (42km) mountain-bike race showcases the red limestone terrain and technical singletrack in the surrounding geopark, while flatter road cyclists use the valley routes like the Carrera de Fondo Villa de Cájar (9km) as shorter intervals before tackling the alpine climbs.
