About this race

Hiru Haundiak translates to “Three Big Ones,” reflecting its course over Gorbea, Anboto, and Aizkorri, three of Euskadi’s highest and most iconic peaks. This 101-kilometer mountain race in Álava, Spain, occurs biennially, featuring 10,125 meters of elevation change within a 24-hour cutoff. The event is part of the UTMB Index and serves as the Basque Country’s primary long-distance mountain race, attracting approximately 1,000 participants. The course has varied its start and finish points, including Araia to Murgia or Asparrena to Zuia, but the core objective remains: connect the three major Basque mountains through a demanding day and night on rugged terrain. Participants encounter extended ascents, challenging trails, and rapid descents, distinct from a consistent road-running pace. Sociedad Excursionista Manuel Iradier directs the race, supported by Fundación Vital. Initiated in the late 1980s, it continues to attract seasoned trail runners, local club members, and individuals seeking one of the Iberian Peninsula’s classic ultradistance mountain challenges.
