About this race
Subida a Oroel is a short, steep mountain race from Jaca up Monte Oroel, the landmark peak above the city in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Held annually in August and organized by Club Atletismo Jaca, it spans 10.7 kilometers with approximately 1,000 meters of ascent. Though the distance seems modest, the effort is akin to a demanding uphill grind. It is one of Aragon’s established mountain races, first run in 1998 and only skipped once during the pandemic.
The course begins in Jaca at 825 meters elevation, includes a brief urban segment, and then ascends via dirt tracks and trails toward the Cruz de Oroel. The mountain is within the San Juan de la Peña and Monte Oroel Protected Natural Space, linking the race to the natural terrain rather than road pace. Participants travel from across Spain and France. The elite field has featured Spanish, European, and world champions, with many mountain running enthusiasts also taking on the climb.
