About this race

Volcanic Epic is a five-day mountain bike stage race across the volcanic heart of New Zealand’s North Island, with riding based around Taupo, Tokoroa, and Rotorua. The full event covers over 200 km, with daily stages typically between 30 and 55 km. Riders can enter solo or as a pair; pair teams must stay within 2 minutes of each other throughout each stage. A two-day solo option is also available for those preferring a weekend version. The route utilizes Rotorua’s hero dirt, geothermal valleys, alpine ridgelines, and purpose-built flow trails, offering a different region and feel each day. Most stages are on grade 3 and 4 trails, with some rollable grade 5 sections. Courses are well marked, eliminating the need for navigation skills. The event attracts riders from over 20 nations, including those seeking competitive racing, shared team objectives, or a significant riding trip with logistical support. Off the bike, organizers focus on recovery and social time, featuring hot springs, local beer at the finish, and meals where riders share stories.
