The ARAC Trail Challenge begins at 10 am from the Halle de Massat in Massat, a village in the Ariège department of Occitanie. This 30 km challenge is for teams of five, featuring 950 meters of elevation gain and a format combining walking, relay running, and individual effort. The race emphasizes shared work over a single runner carrying the team: each team designates one walker for the first loop, three relay runners, and uses a points-based system for team rankings.
The course consists of three loops measuring 8.6 km, 14.8 km, and 6.6 km, allowing teammates to divide the distance. The initial loop gives the walker a significant role in the outcome. The middle loop represents the longest section, and the final loop is brief enough to feel quick following the preceding climbs. The event is organized by ARAC EN TRAIL, a new trail association from the Massat valleys with 25 members shortly after its establishment. Its focus is local and team-oriented: runners, walkers, and mixed-ability groups can participate in the same challenge and still contribute to the final standings.
