The Challenge des dunes de Flandre is a beach running event held on the North Sea coast near Dunkirk in Hauts-de-France. Participants can choose from three distances: a 2.7 km race for younger runners, a 10 km race, and a 21.1 km half marathon for more seasoned athletes. The event welcomes participants of all abilities, accommodating families, newer runners, and those seeking a challenging coastal run.
The course crosses the dunes and sandy beaches near Bray-Dunes, situated approximately 15 km west of Dunkirk and adjacent to the Belgian border. Bray-Dunes holds the distinction of being the northernmost municipality in France. The Belgian town of La Panne is located about 2 km away along the beach. The terrain is mostly at sea level, with elevations reaching only 29 m. The primary challenges stem from the sand, wind, open coastal exposure, and the unique sensation of running alongside the North Sea, rather than significant elevation gain.
