About this race
The Saint-Leu Vertical Kilometer is a mountain time trial featuring 1,000 meters of elevation gain. Participants start individually, 20 seconds apart, creating a personal challenge against the incline rather than a group race. This event is a stage in Réunion Island’s vertical running championship, focused on reaching the summit and ringing the finish bell.
The route is challenging, favoring strength, controlled pacing, and mental fortitude as the ascent intensifies. Younger participants, from age 14, can compete on a 500-meter climb to their own bell. Teams of two can divide the entire course into a 2 x 500-meter relay. Additionally, a prize is awarded to the quickest runner at the 500-meter point, while the leading full-course competitors vie for the King or Queen of Témor Cayenne title.
