The Course des Terrils begins at the Château de la Princesse d’Arenberg in Raismes, located in the Nord department of northern France. This late-September trail race offers multiple distances: a 3 km option suitable for families, shorter routes of approximately 9 and 10 km, middle distances at 16 and 25 km, and a 45 km trail featuring around 600 metres of elevation gain. Night races are also available, making the weekend accessible for children, novice trail runners, club members, and individuals seeking an extended challenge on uneven terrain.
The race derives its name from the terrils, which are old mining slag heaps that define the course and contribute to its difficulty. Participants will run through forests and marshlands, repeatedly ascending and descending these artificial hills. The event has been held since 1984, and its connection to mining is reflected in the slogan, “Au charbon !” — translating to “Back to the coal!” Aid stations incorporate the local northern French ambiance, offering a social atmosphere with music instead of a purely functional setup.
