About this race

Course du Campanin is a 13.5 km urban trail race in Menton, on the French Riviera in the Alpes-Maritimes, held in late October. It begins and ends by the sea at the esplanade des Sablettes, then quickly becomes a climbing city race with approximately 300 metres of elevation gain. The event is organized by Menton Marathon with the City of Menton, and its current format adapts the old Campanin route into a City Trail style instead of a standard road run. The first half ascends toward the upper sections of Menton, including the challenging montée des Colombières, making the race more difficult than its seaside start implies. The second half follows Menton’s trails and old town streets, with sections like Chemin des Bellevessases, Sentier du Paropert, Rue du Vieux Château, and Rue Longue. The race was once nicknamed the “goat race,” hinting at its stairs, slopes, and narrow old passages. Its name derives from Menton’s “campanin,” the bell tower above the Basilica of Saint-Michel, and the city also possesses a local identity influenced by its well-known lemon festival.
