About this race

GravelMan Brest begins in Brest, a port city on the western edge of Brittany in Finistère, offering riders a choice of gravel or road routes. The selection is extensive: five distances, just under 500, 350, 200, 120, and 60 kilometers, with each distance available in both formats. This setup accommodates both bikepacking-style ultra challenges and demanding day rides, depending on the chosen option. The event emphasizes self-reliance over a traditional race village atmosphere; riders are expected to navigate using GPS, carry their own food and water, and manage the conditions and terrain without support stations. The routes traverse some of western Brittany’s most unique landscapes, including the Crozon peninsula, the Abers, the Monts d’Arrée, and the Côte des Légendes. Participants will encounter the Atlantic coast, granite formations, heathland, valleys, moors, rural roads, and small Breton villages. Highlights include cliffs overlooking the Iroise Sea, tidal inlets, menhirs, Menez-Hom, and vistas towards the Bay of Douarnenez. The organizers humorously describe the course profile as “like a pancake folded in all directions,” accurately signaling that it is not a flat coastal ride. The shorter routes provide a challenging yet manageable outing for many, while the longest options cater to those who enjoy extended hours, route-finding, and a muddy finish.
