La Montée de la Croix starts in the pedestrian center of Autun and finishes at the top of the city, with both the start and finish lines on Place De Lattre de Tassigny. The primary race covers 11.3 km with 355 m of elevation gain, presenting a short, distinctly uphill challenge rather than a flat road race. Stade Athlétique Autunois organizes the event, which features four races in total: two free children's races and a 4.3 km Foulées Autunoises option that includes 115 m of climbing.
The course's reward is the panoramic view over Autun, the feature that lends the race its name and local appeal. It accommodates a varied field: children, participants seeking the shorter city race, and more accomplished hill runners tackling the full Montée de la Croix. Corentin Leroy has achieved notable success, winning the main race four consecutive times. The organizing club collaborates with SEP 71, an association dedicated to multiple sclerosis, which offers information and support, and has a presence near the finish line.
