About this race
The La Vaitavere Run directs participants straight towards the challenging Punaauia climb, commencing from Punaruu stadium in Punaauia, Tahiti. This early-year event features two races, approximately 6.5 km and 9 km, alongside a 4 km walk for those seeking the same ascent without the competitive aspect. With close to 180 participants, it maintains a local, compact feel rather than a large-scale gathering, though its uphill course presents a significant challenge.
The route emphasizes elevation gain, with the Punaauia climb recognized as a demanding sporting location. Rodrigue Lozinguez secured victory in the shorter race at 26:51, surpassing previous winner David Bernard. In the longer race, Damien Troquenet finished first in 35:25, solidifying his standing among Tahiti's top road and cross-country athletes. Organizer Dan Pihaatae also utilizes the event to identify emerging talent, resulting in a mix of recognized competitors, club members, and individuals testing their limits on one of Punaauia's more arduous ascents.
