Montée de la Mine - Valmeinier is a ski mountaineering race in Valmeinier, featuring two timed uphill-only courses. The Grande Mine covers 870 metres over 4.9 km, and the Petite Mine covers 550 metres over 3.1 km. Even the shorter course is steep from the beginning. It is listed on the French Mountain and Climbing Federation calendar. Ski touring participants must be aged 14 or older.
The route ascends through forest, offering wide mountain views and a perspective toward the Grand Perron des Encombres. Following the climb, competitors undertake a laser rifle shooting test, which can incur time penalties. This adds a biathlon-style element without making it a complete biathlon event. The atmosphere is informal, with on-site volunteers and hot drinks available at the finish. The post-race meal is a local specialty: diots with polenta, a Savoyard tradition following a demanding ascent.
