About this race

Raid des Gabariers is a winter trail race held in Chalvignac, a small village in Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France. The race crosses the Dordogne River gorges, set in the rugged landscape between the Millevaches en Limousin area and the Auvergne volcanoes regional park. Participants can select from short, middle, and long trail distances of approximately 15-16 km, 26 km, and 41-42 km, each featuring significant elevation gain. The longest course includes about 2,300 m of ascent, with the 26 km and 16 km routes also presenting considerable climbs. A 15 km hike is typically available, catering to those who prefer not to compete for a fast time. The routes incorporate technical paths, singletrack, steep inclines, and sections off marked trails. The course layout is modified annually to showcase different segments of the Dordogne gorges. Raid des Gabariers holds the distinction of being the oldest winter trail race in Auvergne, appealing to runners seeking an early-season challenge rather than a relaxed return to racing post-winter. The long race has previously offered UTPMA qualifying status, an ITRA Mountain Level listing, a nine-hour time limit, and multiple aid stations. Despite these features, the event maintains a local feel with approximately 250 participants registered for the main race in a recent edition. Upon finishing, all participants receive the traditional onion and cheese soup, a fitting reward for the cold weather, challenging trails, and a village event that embraces its mountainous setting.
