Raid des Gabariers is a winter trail race starting in the small village of Chalvignac in Cantal. It runs through the wild Dordogne gorges, situated between the Millevaches en Limousin and Volcans d'Auvergne natural parks. Three distances are offered: 15 km, 26 km, and approximately 41 km. Even the shorter routes present significant elevation gain, with average climbing grades noted at 8%, 10%, and 12%. The longest race involves around 2,400 metres of climbing and has a 9-hour time limit.
The race holds the distinction of being the oldest winter trail in Auvergne. It emphasizes challenging terrain over smooth running. The courses are altered annually, allowing participants to explore different sections of the gorges. These routes feature technical paths, single track, off-trail segments, steep ascents, and include four aid stations along the longest course. The event attracts a restricted field of about 250 participants and serves as an early-season test following the winter period, while also honoring Fernand La Pierre Nougein.
